Common Equipment for Fertilizer Dry Granulation Method

Fertilizer dry granulation is a key process in modern fertilizer production, and its efficiency and quality largely depend on the equipment used. Different dry granulation machines are designed to handle specific raw materials and meet various production needs. Understanding the features of common equipment is essential for choosing the right one. This blog focuses on two main types: roller extrusion granulators and flat die granulators.

Roller Extrusion Granulator

The roller extrusion granulator is widely used in medium to large – scale fertilizer production due to its excellent performance.

Roller Extrusion Granulator

This machine mainly consists of a feeding system, two counter – rotating rollers with special patterns or grooves, and a discharge system. The fertilizer powder is evenly fed into the space between the two rollers. Under high pressure (usually 10 – 30 MPa), the powder is squeezed and compacted into granules. The shape of the granules is determined by the patterns on the rollers, which can be cylindrical, oval, or other shapes.

Application Advantages

  • High Production Output: It can produce 2 – 20 tons of granules per hour, which is very suitable for large fertilizer factories that need mass production.
  • Moderate Granule Hardness: The granules made by this machine have appropriate hardness, which is not easy to break during transportation and storage, and can also ensure good dissolution in the soil.
  • Wide Raw Material Adaptability: It works well with various fertilizer raw materials, such as NPK compound fertilizers, mineral fertilizers, and mixed organic – inorganic fertilizers. It is especially suitable for materials with low moisture content (2% – 5%).

Suitable Raw Materials

It is ideal for processing mineral – based fertilizers, NPK blends, and fertilizers with high content of inorganic components.

Flat Die Granulator

The flat die granulator is a popular choice for small to medium – scale fertilizer production, especially for organic fertilizer manufacturers.

Working Mode

It is composed of a flat die with many small holes (ranging from 2mm to 8mm in diameter) and one or more pressure rollers. The fertilizer powder is sent to the surface of the flat die. The pressure rollers rotate and press the powder through the holes of the die, forming continuous strips. Then, a cutting device cuts these strips into granules of a certain length.

Granule Characteristics and Pros & Cons

  • Granule Shape and Specification: The granules are usually cylindrical with uniform length, and their diameter is consistent with the size of the die holes. The common specifications are 2mm, 3mm, 5mm, and 8mm.
  • Advantages: It has a simple structure, small floor area, and low initial investment. It is very suitable for small workshops or new fertilizer producers. It can well handle organic raw materials with certain fiber content, such as decomposed manure, straw powder, and compost.
  • Disadvantages: Compared with the roller extrusion granulator, its production output is lower, generally 0.3 – 3 tons per hour. The hardness of the granules is relatively low, which may be easy to break if not handled properly.

Comparison of Cost Performance and Maintenance Difficulty

  • Roller Extrusion Granulator: The price is relatively high, In terms of maintenance, the rollers are vulnerable parts and need to be replaced every 6 – 12 months under heavy use. The maintenance process is a little complex, requiring professional technicians, so the maintenance cost is moderate.
  • Flat Die Granulator: The price is more affordable, The main vulnerable part is the flat die, which needs to be replaced every 3 – 6 months. The maintenance is simple, and ordinary operators can master the basic maintenance skills, so the maintenance cost is low.

Conclusion

The roller extrusion granulator is suitable for large – scale production of inorganic and compound fertilizers, with high output and good granule quality. The flat die granulator is more suitable for small – scale production, especially for organic fertilizers, with low cost and simple operation. When choosing, you should consider your production scale, raw material type, and budget comprehensively.
